Past & Present Mixed Dozen

  • 2015 Fetherston Premium Pinot Noir

'Great debut from this winery. Red cherry and raspberry, cinnamon danish and dried roses, dusty spicy oak and earthy scents. Medium bodied, again dusty and spicy, but with juicy red berries and a juicy kind of cranberried acidity, grainy almost nebbiolo-like tannin plays on the finish. Great drinking.'

    2016 Fetherston Premium Nebbiolo

'Hand-picked, two ferments: 70% whole berries and 30% whole bunches, 60 days on skins, matured for 12 months in French oak (17% new). Bright, brilliantly clear colour; cherry blossom, rose petals, violets and spices whether you're taking in the bouquet or cradling the palate This really is a nebbiolo to make you think of pinot noir. Gorgeous wine.'

    2016 Fetherston Premium Shiraz

'Fetherston is one the best value producers in Australia right now. It is because the quality is so good. This saw 20% whole bunches, was fermented wild, was left on skins for 30 days post ferment, and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. It’s from a single vineyard at Coldstream. 200 dozen made.
It’s Yarra Valley shiraz to a tee. Ripe cherry-berried fruit, lots of dry spice and pepper notes, a smattering of leaves and a lick of anise. Oak whispers away in the background, as do gum leaf notes. It’s just a beautiful wine. So much finesse.'

    2017 Fetherston Premium Chardonnay

'From Gruyere (72%) and Gembrook (28%), hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, matured in French oak (20% new) with minimal stirring, 260 dozen made. Relatively early picking has given the wine a brisk start on life, grapefruit pith and zest lined up with white stone fruits, the oak integrated.'

    2019 Fetherston Premium Chardonnay

'I love the purity of this wine. It tastes essential. It includes flavours of nectarine and apple, dry pear and citrus, edges of chalk and cedar through the finish helping to tie it all together. Is there a flintiness here? Not really, but maybe a fraction. It’s as harmonious as it is sophisticated. And it has excellent length.'

    2019 Fetherston Premium Pinot Noir

'Wow this is up and about. It’s so complex it almost seems developed, though of course it remains fresh and indeed fruity. It’s just that it’s a wine of such character. Undergrowth, forest floor, red cherry and brown spice characters are all over the nose and indeed the palate. It welcomes you straight in and then keeps the entertainment rolling. A stemminess to the aftertaste works as a positive. No need for patience here.'

    2018 Fetherston Premium Nebbiolo

'Yes. Very lovely wine. Fine-fingered but with just enough meat. Spicy. Woody-spicy. Anise, red cherry and flecks of herbs. Leather too. Everything feels both tense and harmonious at once. Very good release.'

    2018 Fetherston Premium Syrah

'Full-bodied but polished, fruit-driven but complex, juicy and accessible but with the structure to age. Boysenberry, mint, deep plum, subtle herbs, smoky bacon, game and forest notes get the job done, and confidently so. Very good now. Will improve.'
